6th Copernicus Graduate School Summer School

"Transitive Justice. Creating Norms and System Change"

Toruń (Poland), 4-6 July 2017


Summer school was organized by the Chair of History of International Relations of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) in cooperation with Palacky University in Olomouc, University of Rostock and German Historical Institute Warsaw.

Workshop participants from 9 countries worked in two workgroups under the guidance of acknowledged social science specialists (fellows) from different countries. The results of the work in groups were presented and discussed in plenary sessions.

The topic of the Summer School was transitional justice and its role for system transformations. Especially the issues of borders, identity formation as well as development of civil society in post-socialist countries were the main points of discussion. Numerous examples and case studies from history and contemporary world were analized.

Young scientists had also an opportunity to present the concepts of their PhD theses. The communication and intensive exchange of thoughts among young scientists and experienced specialists (fellows) occurred both during work in groups and plenary sessions.

The work of the summer school was divided into two workgroups:

1. Nation as Agreement of Values: Frontiers, Borders and Belongness

2. Society and Justice: Boundaries and Possibilities of Civil Society Organisation Mechanisms

"Inclusion and Exclusion as Constitutive Elements of Society Formation Processes"

"History and Politics. Remembrance as Legitimation"

Workshop participants from 8 countries worked in four workgroups under the guidance of acknowledged social science specialists (fellows) from different countries. The results of the work in groups were presented and discussed in plenary sessions.

The topic of the Summer School were relations between history and politics in the conditions of rebirth of nationalism after the collapse of communism, the erosion of collective identities, identity-conflicts in the European Union, as well as a revolution in communication, and ongoing globalization.

Young scientists had also an opportunity to present the concepts of their PhD theses. The communication and intensive exchange of thoughts among young scientists and experienced specialists (fellows) occurred both during work in groups and plenary sessions.

3rd CGS Summer School

"Politicized Society, or How Much Politics Do We Need?"

Summer school was organized by the Chair of History of International Relations of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) in cooperation with the Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany).

Workshop participants from 10 countries worked in three workgroups under the guidance of acknowledged social science specialists (fellows) from different countries. The results of the work in groups were presented and discussed in plenary sessions.

The topic of the Summer School developed interdisciplinary approaches to elementary fields of politics, society and international relations in a comparative perspective. The question of necessity to politicize society was the main point of interest. The aim of the project was to search for an anwser to the question how much of politics is needes in the society, what are the expectations towards politicians and political organisations. Also the globalization and remabrance and their influence on politics were considered. The last question was how the norms and values change within the political process, as well as what is their significance for the modern society.

Young scientists had also an opportunity to present the concepts of their PhD theses. The communication and intensive exchange of thoughts among young scientists and experienced specialists (fellows) occurred both during work in groups and plenary sessions.

During the summer school an international scientific conference took place. The topic of the conference was similar to the topic of the whole event. Speakers were 9 scientists from 6 countries, among them fellows and invited guests. They presented speeches on the issues of history and current developments in nation building as well as relations between civil society and nation in contemporary Europe from historic, economic, legal, administrative and sociological perspective. Also other participants of the summer school (PhD students) took active part in the conference, what resulted in a lively discussion.

"Society and Nation in Transnational Processes in Europe"

Summer school was organized by the Chair of History of International Relations of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) in cooperation with the Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany), Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Hungary) and Palacky University in Olomouc (Czech Republic).

Workshop participants from 7 countries worked in four workgroups under the guidance of acknowledged social science specialists (fellows) from different countries. The results of the work in groups were presented and discussed in plenary sessions.

The topic of the Summer School developed interdisciplinary approaches to elementary fields of politics, society and international relations in a comparative perspective. The nation as an organization form of modern societies was the main point of interest. Therefore, its necessity as a bearer of civil society structures as well as the justifiability of its existence in the processes of internationalization and globalization were inquired. The aim of the project was to contribute to a comprehension of the complexity of social and transnational development as well as to reveal its movement and communication patterns.

Young scientists had also an opportunity to present the concepts of their PhD theses. The communication and intensive exchange of thoughts among young scientists and experienced specialists (fellows) occurred both during work in groups and plenary sessions.

"Models of European Civil Societies. Transnational Perspectives on Forming of Modern Societies in Central Europe"

Summer school was organized by the Chair of History of International Relations of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) in cooperation with the University of Miskolc (Hungary), Palacky University in Olomouc (Czech Republic) and Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany).

Workshop participants from 11 countries worked in three workgroups under the guidance of acknowledged social science specialists (fellows) from different countries. The results of the work in groups were presented and discussed in plenary sessions.

Subject of the summer school were the forms and development level of modern societies in Central Europe. The main aspects of the work were set in a comparative way, which facilitated an equally intensive access for different disciplines of social sciences. Young scientists had also an opportunity to present the concepts of their PhD theses. The communication and intensive exchange of thoughts among young scientists and experienced specialists (fellows) occurred both during work in groups and plenary sessions.

During the summer school an international scientific conference took place. The topic of the conference was similar to the topic of the whole event.
