8th Copernicus Graduate School Seminar

"Rising Authoritarianism and the Role of Civil Society in Asia"

Rostock, Germany, 1-2 December 2017

The seminar was organised by the University of Rostock.

Participants were 9 PhD students from 6 countries - CGS members. During the event participants discussed issues of political systems, civil societies and political developments in Asian Countries. Their specifics were outlined, also in the comparative perspective, where general trends and particular case studies were analyzed.

7th Copernicus Graduate School Seminar

"Visual History and Historical Reception Studies"

Rostock, Germany, 1-3 December 2016

The seminar was organised by the University of Rostock.

Participants were 15 PhD students from 9 countries - CGS members. During the event participants discussed approaches to research visual history and its reception. Also the importance of visual material in researching history was analyzed, as photographs, films, posters and images.
On the last day the participants shared their opinions on the film "Rotation" by Wolfgang Staudtes.

6th Copernicus Graduate School Seminar

"Minorities in (Central) Europe with Special Focus on Roma"

Warsaw, Poland, 27-29 April 2016

The seminar was organised by German Historical Institute Warsaw.

Participants were 14 PhD students from 7 countries - CGS members. During the event participants discussed approaches to research on ethnical minorities, presenting problems of Roma minority in Slovakia, their relations with Slovak majority and strategies of their integration in the society. On the last day the participants shared experiences with their PhD concepts and how they can use what they learnt in future research.

5th Copernicus Graduate School Seminar

"Society in Dictatorship. Stalinism and its Consequences"

Rostock, Germany, 3-5 December 2015

The seminar was organised by the University of Rostock.

Participants were 20 PhD students from 9 countries - CGS members and guests from Rostock. During the event participants discussed approaches to research on stalinism and its consequences for Central-Eastern European countries.
In the introductory part new CGS members were welcomed. In the evening young scholars visited former Stasi Prison in Rostock and were guided by the former political prisoner. On the last day the participants shared the experiences with attitudes towards stalinism and communist system in their countires.

The speaker and chair was prof. Stefan Creuzberger from the History Department of that university.

It was held in the building of the Historical Institute of the University of Rostock. The working language was English.

The event was financially supported by the Herbert Quandt-Stiftung.

4th Copernicus Graduate School Seminar

"Jewish Spaces-Jewish Places"

Warsaw, Poland, 5-8 March 2015

The seminar was organized by the German Historical Institute Warsaw in cooperation with the POLIN, the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

Young scientists discussed variety of issues about Jewish culture and communities in Europe. The first part of the event was devoted to definitions of Jewish places and spaces, as well as to the history of Jews in the 1st Polish Republic. After that the participants visited the Polin museum. In the evening the group watched and discussed the film Ida. In the second part the focus was laid on the Jewish communities in the border areas in 19. and 20. century and Jewish ghettos as an enforced Jewish space and its symbolic role after the tragedy of holocaust.

The seminar was organized by the University of Rostock and the Rostock University of Music and Theatre in cooperation with the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) and Palacky University in Olomouc (Czech Republic).

Young scientists discussed variety of issues about civil society in the non European countries. The first part of the event was devoted to the Asiatic developments in Nepal, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia. In the second part the focus was laid on the Latin American societies of Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Urugauy etc.

"Revitalizing of Local and Regional Cultures"

The seminar was organized by the Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany) in cooperation with the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) and Palacky University in Olomouc (Czech Republic).

Young scientists discussed variety of issues connected to the seminar topic. The most important points were: language, nation, identity, regional languages in comparative perspective, the significance of mulitilingity, as well as so-called "small languages" and prognosis of their development in the future.

1st Copernicus Graduate School Seminar

Toruń, Poland, 21-22 April 2013


The seminar was organized by the Chair of History of International Relations of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) in cooperation with the Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany), Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Hungary) and Palacky University in Olomouc (Czech Republic).

It had the introductory character for the work of the members group. After presentation of the CGS fellows and members, the programme and idea of the project was commented. Afterwards every CGS member presented and discussed their PhD thesis concept with fellows and other members.

It was chaired by Professor Ralph Schattkowsky and Adam Jarosz, M.A. The working language was English. It was held in the building of the Collegium Humanisticum in Toruń.
